Cement Board Drywall

Essentially drywall is gypsum pressed between two sheets of paper. Cement board is a product made to withstand continuous contact with water and is suitable as a backerboard for tile in showers and tub surrounds. Cement board is used for most floor tile and has all but replaced plywood and drywall backer materials for wall tile applications in wet areas like showers and tub surrounds. Cement boards are made up of cement and glass fibers.

Remodeling a bathroom often requires cement backer board be installed as a substrate for tile or another wall covering in a tub surround or other area that is exposed to large amounts of moisture. Cement board cement board also comes in panels but that s where its similarity to drywall ends. Cement board is a very hard panel formed by cement slurry and reinforced fiberglass mesh. Greenboards or blueboards on the other hand are types of drywall.

Permabase 0 438 in x 36 in x 60 in plus cement backer board. It provides a strong base on which to install tile and stone. In high moisture shower areas such as shower enclosures use cement backer board. At some point along the wall the cement backer board will meet with the drywall used in the rest of the room.

It is made of cement water silica limestone flour and fibers such as kevlar or fiberglass for increased strength. Paperless drywall has been replacing paper drywall. Cement backer board is a mineral based pre fabricated wall unit usually 1 4 inch or 1 2 inch thick and 3 feet by 5 feet long. These are available in 4 8 foot and 3 5 foot sheets that are either 1 2 inch or 1 4 inch thick.
