Cement Door Sill Repair

There are a number of weatherproofing issues we need to address but the most urgent is the concrete sill under the door which has been crumbling for a while and presumably is the source of our leak.

We have a metal threshold over a concrete sill and our front porch is a concrete slab about 4 x6. Hold the new door sill in place with construction adhesive and fasteners. Caulk around the outside of the door sill. If it fits apply liquid nails glue to the concrete and attach the threshold.

When the saddle is in place restore the door jamb adding calk so that it fits nicely. Then test the threshold for fit. Remove the old door sill from beneath the door frame. We ve been having some issues with water leaking into our basement under our front door.

If there s carpeting trim the carpet where frayed material hangs loosely. The aluminum door threshold should sit level on the sill and join to it with a waterproof flexible and adhesive sealant polyurethane. Lift the threshold out and drill 1 1 2 inch deep holes at each drill tip mark on the concrete. Cut the new door sill to size and bevel the outer edge.

Paint or stain the new door sill. Cut it with a hacksaw. Drive a new 3 16 by 1 inch concrete anchor into each of the holes with a hammer. Remove all debris from the concrete slab.

If i raise the concrete pour mounting the sill i might be able to cantilever and extend the lip of the sill about 75 1 into the air over the exterior brick landing. Remove dirt and debris from chips and hairline cracks in the concrete threshold using a stiff bristle cleaning brush. Slide the threshold underneath the doorstops and position the notches you cut around the door jambs. Tap it snugly into position using a rubber mallet.

Lay a bead of caulk along what will be the back edge of the threshold. 2 mix a moderate amount of liquid detergent with 1 quart of water in a. Install a cover alone or purchase a cover and sill combination. If desired protect and liven up a sill with a metal sill cover which wraps around the front of the sill.
